Navigate to URL – opening an address

The command "Navigate to URL" opens an address in the user's browser – in a new tab or in place of the application. This page is for administrators who build buttons that lead to other systems.

1. At a glance

Purpose Send the user to a web address
Typical use Open the record in an external system, a map, a document link stored in a field
Where in the editor Toolbar menu "UI" → "Navigate to URL"
Needs a user interface Yes
Needs a current record No (the expression may read one)
Related Navigate, HTTP Request

2. Settings

The settings are on the tab "Settings". Like every command, the command also has "Display Name", "Description" and "Execution Condition" on the tab "General" (see Actions).

Setting Meaning Default / Required
"Target URL" Expression for the complete address, for example https://maps.example.com/?q=… Required
"Open target in same window" Replaces the application in the current tab instead of opening a new tab Off

3. Behaviour

  1. Without a user interface, the command is skipped.
  2. The address is computed. If it is empty, the command is skipped.
  3. Only complete http:// or https:// addresses are opened. Anything else – a relative address, mailto:, file: – is not opened; a warning is written to the log.
  4. The address opens in a new tab, or – with "Open target in same window" – in the current tab.
  5. The action continues.

With "Open target in same window", the user leaves nexxcite. Unsaved input in that tab is lost and the following commands of the action have no page left to work with; make this command the last one.

4. Example

Show the delivery address on a map. "Target URL": a text expression that joins https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query= with the street and city of the customer.

5. Limitations

  • Whether a new tab opens is also decided by the browser and its pop-up blocker. Please check the settings of the browser used in your organisation if new tabs do not appear.
  • Only http and https addresses can be opened. A rejected address is not reported to the user.
